Trinidad Carnival 2011: Machel Monday – The Return w/ Ms Paige
Refreshed from my day trip to Tobago and ready to get on wassi, it was time for the return of the winerboy, Machel Montano. Dubbed Machel Monday, the 35,000 ticket sold-out concert, The Return, included local and foreign, new and seasoned, young and veteran artistes – Trinidad was ready for a show!
The madness began with Lil Bitts giving the crowd a lil dose of her sweetness. Young Calypso Monarch, Benjai, had many fellas in the audience jealous with the wining serenade he got from Lil Bitts. I’m sure plenty men were hoping he’d jus wine to de side and leave Bittsy for them! But you know Benjai couldn’t leave the stage without performing the most patriotic song of the season, Trini. Even if your heritage did not reside in Trinidad & Tobago, from the first See Mi Ya, you became an honourary Trini.

After a short break, Kes The Band dressed in patriotic colours of red, white and black started the wotlessness – trust me, the crowd went WILD! And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they brought to the stage de sweetest voice ever in soca/calypso, DE BARON! Decked in a pink suit, the vocal master had the entire crowd singin along in unison to Feelin It. Kes The Band ended their set with WOTLESS – I swear every single person in that 35,000-people crowd sang along word-for-word like they jus win a million dollars, simply foreshadowing Kes’ $2million win in the nights to come – but that’s another blog entry!
During the break between performances, wotless Paige headed to the bar to re-stock. This had to be the worst part of the night – must’ve taken at least 45 minutes to get a drink (or four). Not only did I miss the very beginning of Machel’s return, but lost my friends in the crowd (shout out Nadelle). But, as Bunji Garlin sang “if it’s me alone me dere!” So the party continued by my lonesome….and my 4 drinks!
Machel returned and he did not return alone! Many of his friends advantaged the stage, including Farmer Nappy, Patrice Roberts, Lil Rick, Alison Hinds, Walker, Mx Prime aka Maximus Dan, Peter C.

Lewis, Pitbull, Kees Deiffenthaller of Kes The Band, Aaron Fresh, Mohombi, and Swappi. The most memorable guests had to be veterans Mighty Sparrow & Calypso Rose, who were crowned the King & Queen of Carnival – Mama & Papa Carnival – by Trinidad’s international cricket player and one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Brian Lara, and Tobago’s 6-time World Cup football player, Dwight Yorke. Calypso Rose shed a tear, and so did my heart (insert awwwwww here) – both of these artistes are prime examples of perseverance, longevity and TALENT in the soca/calypso music industry.

Machel Montano HD blazed from chune to chune, mixing some old with some new – Xtatik classics like Big Truck & Footsteps to newer hits like Craziness, Higher Than High, Rollin and Jumbie to most recent chart toppers such as Bend Over, Hard Wuk, Coming Again, Illegal, and the hypest of ‘em all ADVANTAGE. The first seven words…”de stage is in front of us…” and the crowd went absolutely DELIRIOUS! Big flag crews, powder posses, illegal winers….everyone and I mean EVERY SINGLE 35,000 PERSON took advantage of the Hasley Crawford Stadium! And just when you think it’s over and music stops, the dancers started stamping, Machel started jumping, and the crowd started chanting “Advantage!” People left this concert ready and excited for Fantastic Friday – 4 days away!
